1. Who We Are

Build My Family (www.buildmyfamily.in) is a free, browser-based family tree builder. We provide genealogy tools and educational guides to help people research and document their family history. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what choices you have.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

We want to be explicit about what we do not do:

• We do not collect, store, or transmit your family tree data — names, dates, relationships, photos, biographical notes, or any other content you enter into the tree editor.
• We do not require you to create an account or provide an email address to use the app.
• We do not sell, rent, or share any personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
• We do not track your individual browsing history or build a profile about you as a person.

3. Data Stored Locally on Your Device

All family tree data — members, relationships, dates, photos, and project settings — is stored exclusively in your browser's local storage on your own device. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly export it using the app's export features (PNG, SVG, GEDCOM, or JSON).

Local storage is cleared if you clear your browser data or use private/incognito mode. We recommend using the JSON backup export to keep a copy of your tree saved elsewhere.

The following items are stored in local storage:

• Your family tree project data (members, relationships, and layout positions)
• App configuration preferences (display settings, colour choices)
• Your onboarding tour completion status
• Your cookie/analytics consent preference

4. Anonymous Analytics

With your consent, we collect anonymous, aggregated usage analytics through Supabase to understand how people use the app. This helps us improve features and prioritise development work.

Analytics data we collect includes:

• Events such as "app opened," "tree exported," or "member added" — without any content from your tree
• Session duration (heartbeat events, auto-deleted after 24 hours)
• Approximate traffic source (e.g., whether you arrived from a search engine or direct link) based on URL referrer parameters — no precise location data
• Browser type and viewport size (anonymous device signals)

We do not log IP addresses in a personally identifiable way, and analytics events contain no names, dates, photos, or any content from your family tree.

Analytics are only collected after you give consent in the cookie banner. You can withdraw consent at any time by clearing your browser's local storage for this site.

5. Cookies

We use a small number of cookies and local storage entries. Here is a full breakdown:

Essential (always active)

• legacy_project_index and legacy_data_* — local storage entries that store your family tree data. Required for the app to function.
• legacy_app_config — stores your app display preferences.
• legacy_tour_completed — remembers whether you have seen the onboarding tour.

Analytics (consent required)

• legacy_consent — a local storage flag recording your analytics consent choice.
• Anonymous event data sent to Supabase (no cookies set; data is sent via HTTPS API calls).

Advertising Cookies (consent required)

This site displays advertisements served by Google AdSense (operated by Google LLC). Google uses cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.

Google AdSense may set the following cookies:

• __gads / __gpi — set by Google to register and report website user actions after viewing or clicking ads.
• NID / DSID — used by Google to store your preferences and other information, including preferred language and number of search results per page.

You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google's Ad Settings, or by visiting aboutads.info. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting networkadvertising.org.

6. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy:

• Google AdSense — advertising. Google Privacy Policy

7. Children's Privacy

Build My Family is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.

8. Your Rights

Because we do not store your personal data on our servers, most traditional data rights (access, deletion, portability) apply to data stored on your own device. You can:

• Access your data — export a full JSON backup from the app's export menu at any time.
• Delete your data — clear your browser's local storage for this site, or use the "Delete Project" option within the app.
• Withdraw analytics consent — clear your browser's local storage for this site.
• Opt out of personalised ads — use Google's Ad Settings.

9. Data Security

Because your family tree data is stored locally in your browser and never transmitted to our servers, the primary security of your data depends on your own device's security. We recommend:

• Keeping your browser and operating system up to date
• Using the JSON backup export to maintain copies in a secure location
• Not using shared or public computers to access your tree

Our website and API endpoints are served over HTTPS. Any analytics data transmitted to Supabase is encrypted in transit.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
